Ast Lab Value. Elevated aspartate aminotransferase ast values are seen in parenchymal liver diseases characterized by a destruction of hepatocytes. In a research study of 15 laboratory tests it was shown that all acute viral hepatitis patients showed an ast level greater than 200 u l and an alt level greater than 300 u l which both are 25 times the upper limit of normal levels. The normal range of values for alt sgpt is about 7 to 56 units per liter of serum. However the ranges of ast and alt numbers may differ slightly depending on the technique and protocols used by different laboratories worldwide.
